Premiere blog topic

Well now,

What a day, what a day, what a day!

Here we are at the new venue. I have so many people to thank for this blog. It's going to be such a great format to exchange ideas on these important issues.

Please feel free to continue commentary on any subject as long as you want; probably throughout the week until the next topic comes out. Whatever! Are these strict rulestoo tough for you?

Ok let's cut to the chase. Before you are a couple of clips of which I consider to be two highly regarded artists. Don't make judgements based on the clips alone. These are just a guidance to get your memories fired upagain. But they're good though.

Comment on anything you like about the clips. You can compare the artists if you like, stating your preference for one or the other, or any aspect of the clips you like. Or treat them seperately altogether.

Hope you enjoy.

Both clips were entertaining. But first, it was always regrettable that the producers of The Shining miscasted the lead role to Jack Nicholson and not Regis Phelbin. Picturing Regis in this crazed way saying, "I'm just gonna bash your f*#&ing brains in" seemed like a natural, and he would have taken the oscar that year.

When the movie first came out I was 17 and took my 15 year old buddy with me to see the show. He never heard of it at the time so I had told him it was a comedy. He was manure-baked in the theatre .. but kinda found that funny later.

Comparing the two clips, if I had not already seen The Shining about half a dozen times, I think that clip made a bigger impression than the Kevin Spacey one, and thus, it would probably make me want to see the movie. However, Kevin was surprisingly good, but could he do Jean Chrétien?

Hello Norbert,

I do believe that the two videos you picked for this week really speak for themselves. However, being adept at artistic interpretation, perhaps I can offer some insights which are not directly apparent from simple viewing.

While Kevin Spacey is most often an actor who portrays serious characters, the video shows that he is in fact more versatile, making him seem more down to earth. More generally, I think that the video helps to remind the general public that celebrities are people too, and that they can have quirks and characteristics which can be very lame really very embarrassing.

The second video...well, what can you say about good old Jacky-N? He's got attitude, he's got style, he's one of the best actors in Hollywood. I think that in the movie "The Shining" directed by Stanely Kubrick, Jack has reached the pinnacle of his career in his portrayal of Jack Torrence. I know that he freaked me out the first time I watched it. As for general implications of the video, I'm not sure that there is much social commentary, except that marrying women as ugly as Shelley Duvall might make you a little crazy sometimes.

Hello all,

The tardiness of my response is an unfortunate occurrence that shall not be the norm for future publishing deadlines.

After intense observation of both clips I can only attempt a critique of each one separately as they both are very dichotomous.

First of all, Kevin Spacey's impressions were breath of fresh air in an otherwise stale culture of actors attempting to portray (or act) as serious as possible. For a thespian that often assumes the role of serious characters, Spacey's impressions (especially Johnny Carson and Christopher Walken) were spot on. I would love to see his take on George W. or Dr. Phil sometime. Upon viewing this clip I would like to now watch Mr. Spacey's portrayl of the cultural icon Lex Luthor, if I could get past how bad the Superman movie truly is.

Now for Jack. This past weekend I watched the Departed, and I watched it twice because it was so good. Personally, I've never had the opportunity to view the Shining, although I'm positive I will now in the next few weeks. Once again this blog has been a revelation to my once monotonous existence. But I think Jack Nicholoson is also an American icon, for evidence of this, look no further than courtside at the L.A. Lakers homegames to see Jack and his bitches taking in the game. He has also claimed to have slept with thousands of women ....... I think theres a little bit of Jack in all of us, some more than others.

Thats my comment on this blizzard filled evening of debauchery and snow angels.

Keep your sticks on the ice,

Byrne

Upon reflection of this week’s choice of video it became apparent that I was faced with a challenging task. How can one evaluate the sheer genius of these two artists as separate entities let alone compare them to each other? This task could a likened to the comparison of a sunrise to a sunset. Each of these natural phenomena are equally beautiful and breathtaking but yet unique nonetheless. To comment on this would be a disgrace to the actors and to the entire acting profession.

I can, however, comment on one of the obvious themes which occur in both of the videos and that is the concept of insanity. As it obvious that Jack Nicholson’s character is lacking in mental capacity, one can only assume that this state has been brought on by years of living with a incredibly annoying, dog ugly wife and a half retarded son. His characters situation is heart wrenching and one that I do not envy. I am also torn and filled with emotion at the thought of the tragic childhood Kevin Spacey had to endure which inevitably lead to the manifestation of his multiple personality disorder which is demonstrated in the clip. Although Mr. Nicholson is playing a role and in contrast Kevin Spacey’ is being himself, we are left to ponder whether or not this makes Mr. Spacey any less of an actor than Mr. Nicholson. I think not.

Great response to the clips. I feel like I'm on a literary review. Well it seems to be going that way.You all continue to impress with your carefully crafted analysis. I liked the sunrise/sunset comparison Jo, and as for Regis doing Jack Torrance well it's pretty funny imagining that. Obviously a lot of talent from these actors.
